WENATCHEE — The Washington Apple Education Foundation announced Thursday that its specialized license plate program has raised more than $142,000 for student scholarships over the past five years.
Since its 2020 launch, the apple-themed license plate has gained popularity throughout the state, with 1,239 plates currently on Washington roads. The program directs $28 from each plate purchase and annual renewal toward scholarships for students from families working in the state's tree fruit industry.
"This milestone is not just about the number of plates—it's about the students whose lives have been changed through the generosity of those who choose to support WAEF in this unique way," said Rolando Martin, WAEF Chairman. "We are grateful to individuals displaying this plate on their personal and company vehicles. You are making higher education possible for hardworking, deserving young people."
The license plate program was developed through a collaborative effort between the Washington Apple Commission and the Washington Apple Education Foundation. It has become a visible symbol of the state's agricultural heritage while providing financial support for education.
The Washington Apple Education Foundation serves as the charitable arm of Washington's tree fruit industry. According to foundation officials, WAEF provides over $1 million in scholarships annually and offers professional and career development training throughout the year for student recipients.
