Wildfire smoke prompts health warning

Posted

EAST WENATCHEE — Public health officials in Chelan and Douglas counties are urging residents to stay indoors as wildfire smoke from the Balsamroot Fire continues to degrade air quality in the region.

The Chelan-Douglas Health District issued a warning Friday, advising that even healthy individuals may experience health problems due to the unhealthy air conditions. Symptoms can include eye irritation, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, headaches, and in some cases, irregular heartbeat and chest pain.

Officials recommend creating a clean air space at home by improving filtration. For those who must venture outside, N-95 or N-100 respirator masks are advised for some protection against smoke particles.

Local libraries have been equipped with portable air filters to provide relief. Residents seeking respite from the smoke are directed to visit the North Central Washington Libraries website for information on locations and hours of these cleaner air shelters.

The health district emphasizes the importance of staying informed about current air quality conditions and taking necessary precautions. Residents are encouraged to monitor the Washington Smoke Blog for up-to-date information on wildfires and air quality, and to follow Chelan County Emergency Management on social media for official evacuation notices.

Those experiencing severe symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
